Founded by Judy Bickerton, a professional hair stylist and make-up artist for the film industry, Strands for Stars is a company specializing in creating fashionable, yet comfortable and natural-looking hair prosthetics for adults and children experiencing hair loss due to cancer.
Strands for Stars is supported by the International Alliance for Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 798. Local 798, a member of the East Coast Council (ECC), is a union, headquartered in New York City representing hundreds of hair stylists and make-up artists working in the film industry. Many of our volunteers stylists are members of Local 798 and have experience working with Hollywood stars.
Strands for Stars represents a special connection between an industry that thrives on style, and a special group of individuals desiring to preserve their individuality and self-esteem during a difficult experience. Our volunteer stylists are dedicated to serving each client in a caring and compassionate manner while creating quality wigs, hats and hairpieces that are natural-looking, comfortable and fashionable.
Strands for Stars brings together a caring group of volunteer hair stylists wanting to make a difference in the lives of individuals that can truly benefit from their talent. Strands for Stars recognizes that the courage and strength demonstrated by those we serve is remarkable - making our clients the true stars.
Our goal is to restore self-esteem, one life at a time.

Creating Quality, Realistic Products
Strands for Stars creates and modifies wigs, hats and hairpieces so they are comfortable, natural-looking and fashionable. We will provide a wig to any individual experiencing hair loss from any type of cancer. However, if an individual experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition other than cancer would like a wig, we will be happy to provide one. We recognize there are many illnesses affecting hair growth and do not turn anyone away. Typically, our clients provide a contribution to help cover the cost of our program, however our products and styling service will be provided free-of-charge if financial assistance is needed. No one will be turned away.
Network of Volunteer Stylists
At Strands for Stars, we are seeking to establish a network of volunteer stylists in order to increase access to our services. Eventually, we would love to see our volunteer network extend across the United States. Through our relationship with Local 798, we hope to bring on new volunteer stylists regularly. Our volunteer stylists are the backbone of this organization - their time and talent allow Strands for Stars to touch more lives and ultimately, make a greater difference. Community-based Educational Programs
Strands for Stars desires to work with community-based programs (for example: American Cancer Society's Look Good - Feel Good program, support groups, church groups, etc.) to provide products and services in a group setting. Our style team will attend a meeting or group setting and work with the attendees to help educate them on styling wigs, wearing hats and scarves, make-up application and the best products to use. If you would like our style team to attend an event, contact us.
